Code of Conduct
A Scintillation of Scions is pleased to join the larger convention community in working to make conventions safer for everyone by adopting an anti-harassment code of conduct. Many venues, conferences, and conventions (including other Sherlockian events such as 221B Con and the Left Coast Sherlockian Symposium) have adopted stringent anti-harassment codes. We believe that opening discussions about the realities of harassment in our culture will help to prevent future problems from occurring in our fan community.
A Scintillation of Scions exists for the enjoyment and enrichment of the Holmesian community, and is dedicated to a welcoming and comfortable conference experience for everyone. Discrimination, harassment, violent, or prejudiced behavior (based on, but not limited to, gender, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, religion, age, sexual orientation, or physical/mental disability) is not tolerated. Unwelcome sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference activity, including presentations. Vendors should not use sexualized images, activities, or other material for promotional purposes.
Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference without a refund at the sole discretion of the conference organizers.
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, religion, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate/unwelcome physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any inappropriate behavior are expected to comply immediately.
The Scintillation of Scions Code of Conduct applies equally to all conference participants, speakers, exhibitors, sponsors, vendors, and hotel staff.
If a participant engages in harassing behavior, the conference staff may take any action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender or expulsion from the conference with no refund. If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please contact a member of the conference staff immediately.
Conference staff will be happy to help participants contact hotel security or local law enforcement, provide escorts, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the conference. We value your attendance.
We expect participants to follow these rules at all conference venues and conference-related social events. This Code of Conduct applies equally to use of social media such as (but not limited to) Facebook, Tumblr, and Twitter. Online harassment of, or prejudiced conduct towards, another conference participant will be treated in the same way as face-to-face misconduct.
(This anti-harassment policy is based on the example policy from the Geek Feminism wiki, created by the Ada Initiative and other volunteers.)
